The 24th Annual Mercedes-Benz Exhibition at Fashion Island
May 19 and 20, 2001
For the 24th time, the Orange County Section of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America
invited to the annual Mercedes-Benz Exhibition at Fashion Island in Newport Beach.
This years' event celebrated the 100th anniversary of the marque of Mercedes.
Although Karl Benz built his first Patent-Motorwagen in 1886
and Gottlieb Daimler produced vehicles since 1889 - the name 'Mercedes'
was not used until 1901, when Emil Jellinek initiated the production of
a new line of Daimler Automobiles. Being not only the Austro-Hungarian Consul
at Nice but also the biggest distributor of Daimler automobiles, he
insisted that the new models would be named after his daughter - Mercedes Jellinek.

In 1959, the potential buyer had the choice between the carburetted (S) version
and the fuel-injected (SE) version.

The V indicates, that the engine is located in the front since Mercedes-Benz
also offered a model 170 H, with the engine in the rear.

modifications like a smaller windshield and modified doors without rollup-windows.
 | Here visible is the 'cutout' in the door and the small 'Brookland-style' wind-shield.
Notice the tachometer, which is turned 90 degrees to have the crucial red line
not obstructed by the steering wheel.

Converted by I.M.A. in Belgium, these were regular production station wagons and the only
postwar Mercedes having received a name.

| One of the two(!) Mercedes-Benz 600 Landaulets in this years' show -
originally owned by Nicolae CeauSescu of Romania.
This is one of only 11 Landaulets produced with 6 doors and a longer
softtop than 'regular' 4 door Landaulets.

bar, remote controls for radio and aircondition -
not visible are the extensive communication devices, like telephone and short

Thanks to the collective effort of the organizers, the clubs involved and the
owners of the automobiles in the exhibition, the annual Fashion Island
Mercedes-Benz Exhibition once more showed to have it's place
among the premier Mercedes-Benz events in the United States. We are looking
forward to the 25th anniversary of Mercedes-Benz Exhibition at Fashion Island  in the year 2002.
